Northern Exposure

Remember the movie Invasion of the Body Snatchers (either version)? The main theme was that each person was taken over by pods that duplicated them in appearance, but their minds followed whatever alien entity. Well, that reminds me of what is going on right before our eyes right now in this country: the government is taking over people’s bodies to conform to its wishes. Only this time it’s with their consent.

The government has been given an inch and taken a mile.

To start with, there’s the whole business about gender. It first became an issue not because of people’s sexuality, but because same sex couples wanted the right to marry so that they could enjoy the benefits of marriage the same as other couples. What’s wrong with that? Nothing, except it opened the door for the government to have a voice concerning people’s sexuality. So, now it’s classified under EEOC as “Gender Information” and gender identification was introduced.

I personally have no opinion in these matters except to say that I don’t want to see people’s beds in the street – because that is where they are. It should not matter who shares that space because it does not affect the way people work, teach, provide service, drive, etc. It has always been ridiculous to me to have classifications and labels attached to people – maybe because I am a woman considered a minority whose people have been affected by those classifications and labels like so many other people of color or race (there goes some more labels). So now people have to identify themselves by pronouns at work and school.

And, because those rights were extended and everyone can enjoy what should be something they should have always been able to enjoy, the government has taken it to the next step and started in on abortion to open another door to conformity. This goes back to the times when America was “great” and wives were treated more like children (or property). Permission to do anything was only granted at the husband’s behest. So, what better way to reintroduce that control than by telling women that they have no say over their own bodies? I did mention Handmaid’s Tale, right?

I think back to Bram Stoker’s idea about vampires also. They have to be let in, too. Why do I always compare people to monsters???
