Consumption Junction

The black hole of the deadly sins, gluttony speaks of a person’s bottomless pit to fill the stomach or some other type of hunger. The only problem is that the filler never finds a bottom.

When I thought of this, I was thinking about people’s consumption habits and how there is so much waste that accompanies it. Then I thought of Thanksgiving and the amount of food that is always presented for this day. And it got me to thinking about how it’s supposed to be a day of giving thanks, but the day is hypocritical because it represents anything but thanks.

And that is what gluttony represents. It’s a take and take sin of consumption. There is never enough (even though there is plenty to go around), and people want seconds and thirds just because the food is present.

How did it come to be that this day represents thanks and giving when the people who sat at the table not only took what was offered, but they took more? Are they thankful for taking all the land and resources and consuming and destroying? Gluttons always have been selfish and only thought of filling their bellies and needs, so I guess it’s apropos to pretend that they were thankful for the sharing.
