I wonder first of all how old Goldilocks was, because if she was a child, her parents should have been keeping an eye out and not let her wander the woods like that. But if she was older, then I have to wonder what she was thinking going into somebody else’s house and just taking over. The endings have differed a little, but they all leave Goldilocks unscathed and either running out or becoming friends with the bears.
In the first place, Goldilocks didn’t knock and wait to see if somebody was home to provide assistance since she was lost. Then she went and ate the baby’s food, broke his chair, and had the nerve to go to sleep in his bed. This was breaking and entering (could be brought down to trespassing), vandalism, and theft.
Why hasn’t someone rewritten this to give a realistic ending? Is it because it was a little blonde girl and the house belonged to big bad bears? Does this mean that she was the model of innocence and therefore should be excused because all she wanted was some assistance? Or does it mean that it was perfectly fine for her to enter the home of the bears since they were big and scary (and brown or black), and therefore it was okay to trespass, vandalize, and steal from them? I believe it’s because the story was an English fairytale and (if you notice) reflects their Imperialistic view.
I’d like to give this story a realistic ending based on today’s views. My version would have Goldilocks either behind bars or the bears exercising their right to protect their home. What do you think?
