Art imitates life imitates art

I appreciate the fact that fiction writers are closer to truths sometimes than historical recollections and musings, but I’m getting more and more apprehensive about real-life people morphing into stereotypes and clone-like beings. It seems to have started with plastic surgery and then reality shows.

The clothing and hair trends are typical and even expected, but not the body altering trends. Clothes and makeup can be removed, and hair is flexible. But the plastic surgery operations can be life-altering and affect a person’s health. Some of the people I’ve seen look so plastic I’m afraid for them to go out into the sunlight because they might melt. And the fact that they all look like each other so much that it’s hard to tell (finally) because of the surgeries and not the skin tones.

Do they not consider what will happen to them when they age? Or do they expect to go out Barbie-style? It is a dangerous practice to remove ribs, inject gunk, etc. because no one can really know (including the perpetrators) what the final outcome will be. But taking a look at some past examples (no names mentioned) may possibly deter.

And it’s disturbing that the same phrases and mindsets are attached to these things also. Those find your mate shows are really interesting. I saw a commercial for people on a farm and a lady saying she was vegan. Why was she on a show where cows and sheep are bred?

It is also shameful that people are becoming the stereotypes that others expect. A person who is a member of the LGBTQ community does not have to display outlandish or butchy behavior because they like someone of the same sex. I’m glad it’s calming down, but there are still displays of people playing the role (especially on reality shows). And the angry black woman rolling her neck and ready to take off the earrings to battle is becoming a boring cliche that should be relegated to comedic acts and not public displays.

People are even expecting others to act a certain way because of the region they are from and not just their race, religion, sexual orientation, or gender. Should all people from the south speak with a twang and give their colloquial howdy? Are all people from Kansas or Nebraska naive? And is everyone from Florida really dumb as a bag of rocks? If I offended anyone, it’s not me – it’s the trend.

Help me out, people. Are there any genuine Real People left in this world?
