Coming to America because it is the melting pot and land of the free has been this country’s advertisement to the rest of the world. The biggest issue I have with this is that America is the wolf in sheep’s clothing. It screams democracy and diversity and freedom, but none of these things apply to those of us who are not at the top of the food chain.
Yes, we have the freedom to buy things (and increase debt while making top folks wealthier, the new sharecropping), especially homes (which will never belong to us because of a thing called property tax). One problem with the opportunity for free enterprise is when black people tried to develop their own communities, those communities somehow became lakes, parks, and freeways.
Yes, we so far have democratic rights such as voting (unless they don’t agree with the regime and things like shutting down the government and appointing certain folks to the Supreme Court happen). And don’t forget that the Bill of Rights are still on the table!
First off, it is not surprising that this place is the way it is, since it was built on the opposite of all these ideals. First there was the “discovery” of a land that was already inhabited and then the new citizens criminalized the current population (which had welcomed them) and annihilated nations of peoples. Next, they acquired a free workforce to support their enterprises and take credit for their knowledge (but of course that knowledge belonged to them since those “savages” belonged to them).
And how about the pretend freedom for that population that took several centuries to become a so-called reality. By the way, when the newcomers went west, they followed the same practices and acquired land that belonged to people who now have to have issues at the border.
This is the main reason why I’m not surprised about the judicial system and government actions. Now, just like the rewriting of other histories, new fairy tales are springing up like that population that was acquired “came looking for opportunities” (while chained?).
I had wondered some time ago about democracy and its origins, and found out it was from Greece’s city-states. It is supposed to be a government of the people, with the citizens having the right to vote. But the concept – just as it was in Greece – was only for those who were deemed to be voting citizens. Similar to this, back when everyone was supposed to be able to vote but had roadblocks, there are new roadblocks that are now present (some a little different), along with the right to vote being revisited.
And how about the overturning of Roe v. Wade? I guess that means that the democratic government is going 100 percent to enforcing child support, since women are required to have children even if unwanted (but maybe the Handmaid’s Tale will come to fruition).
Right now diversity is being practiced by all, or is it? Diversity is supposed to be the incorporation of diverse cultures and peoples (that melting pot I’ve heard about). But diversity is only on the surface in reality. As I stated in the original post, Barbie is still Barbie but in different tones, and groupthink is the only acceptable behavior in the workplace (unless you are an entertaining stereotype).
