How Now

Speaking of being in a rut or spinning our wheels, what is it that keeps us from actually changing our way of thinking or doing when we keep seeing the same results? Of course we don’t always see it as our mishaps that keep bringing about the poor solution – it has to be the other person or “bad luck” or society or “them.”

Blame is an easy excuse to place on others or on luck, but blame is not going to repair any damage.

When we don’t know why we can never fix a situation or relationship, or something keeps happening over and over without a viable solution, sometimes we turn to traditional methods. And sometimes we call in the experts.

The Traditional Way

There are many values steeped in the agricultural (even though farm life no longer dominates the majority of society). Values about family life and work ethic, for instance, are carried over into today’s society. Beliefs in religion and medicine have changed somewhat, but still follow the foundation laid by old rural society and have an impact on the way society operates. But what about the thinking of the average person about what affects daily life and being able to cope and live in this society?

Einstein provided a great definition of insanity: the act of doing the same thing over and over again with the same result. This doesn’t apply to those traditions like family values and work ethic, but on the new traditions that have sprouted into society that break down society instead of building it up; traditions that create generational curses where children develop bad influences such as substance abuse and domestic violence.

Calling in the Troops

One tradition followed by people in abusive situations is a no-tell or keep business private mentality. “Handling” their problems was always the only solution (and not handled at all).

Fortunately, there are more solutions offered by agencies and institutions that were not present before that deal with the generational issues that plague these families. Even though there are people who still blame society, bad luck, and “them,” there are many more who are educating themselves with the information that will break these generational curses and are actively seeking viable solutions with the assistance of those with the resources to help.
